IELTS, like TOEFL, is an international test that measures a candidate’s spoken and written English language proficiency. Though earlier it was more popular in countries such as UK, Canada and Australia, now, an increasing number of US universities have also started accepting IELTS as a measure of a student’s verbal and written English communication.
It is a paper based test that has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The first three sections are conducted without any break. The test lasts for about four hours but sometimes the first three sections and the Speaking section could be conducted on two separate days. Each section is scored on a range of 1 to 9 bands and the total score is out of 9 bands.
